Pachuca won the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League title on Wednesday, defeating fellow Liga MX club Tigres 1-0 in Leg 2 of the final to win the series 2-1 on aggregate.
Franco Jara scored an 83rd minute goal and US national team and ex-LA Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez helped pitch a shutout to give Los Tuzos the crown. They’ll represent CONCACAF at the FIFA Club World Cup later this year.
Pachuca’s center back duo of Gonzalez and Oscar Murillo were immense on Wednesday, turning away cross after cross as Tigres registered just one shot on goal.
Jara fired home the series winner in the 83rd minute, five minutes after Tigres’ Guido Pizarro was sent off for a challenge on Hirving Lozano. Lozano actually started the play that led to the goal, firing a long range shot that Tigres ‘keeper Nahuel Guzman failed to hold, allowing Jara to swoop in and bury the rebound.
