MLS part of unique super sports equinox as 10 sports leagues, tournaments hold events on same day

Super Sports Equinox

It is only a few short months since sports fans were desperately searching far and wide to find any live action they could tune into. How things have changed.

On Thursday, MLS will be part of a unique super sports equinox as for the first time ever 10 sports league or professional tournaments will hold events on the same day in North America.

As well as tonight's MLS encounter between the Seattle Sounders and the San Jose Earthquakes (10 pm ET | MLS LIVE on ESPN+; MLS LIVE on DAZN in Canada), the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, WNBA, college football, U.S. Open Tennis, PGA Tour and LPGA Tour will all be in action.

The NFL — which begins its season Thursday night — the NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS and college football have only played on the same date twice before in history. The last time was in October of 2018.

It is, of course, important to acknowledge the primary reason for this unique combination of sports on a single day: the COVID-19 pandemic that required a dramatic restructuring of seasons in the NBA, WNBA, NHL and other leagues.

But while the country continues to focus on battling the COVID-19 pandemic, the unique circumstances and schedules that have resulted across all sports have created a sports fan's dream, at least for one day.
