MLS Fantasy: Defenders continue strong play, but midfielders steal the show in Round 5 -

Round 5 of MLS Fantasy Soccer: Manager was full of goals — in fact, it was the second-most of any round this season. Even with three teams missing action due to byes, nine teams managed to tally multiple scores in their outings. Only three teams secured clean sheets this week (FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo and Sporting KC) and Matt Hedges was the only player in Round 5 to make the Dream Team in back-to-back weeks. Benny Feilhaber and Will Johnson both made their first Dream Team appearance of the season.

Dream Team formation: (5-4-1)

Top Player: Benny Feilhaber, Will Johnson – 13 points

Defenders (5)

Five defenders secured a spot on the weekly DT for the fourth time in five rounds, which highly justifies the importance of their role in FS:M. Michel ($5.1m), Matt Hedges ($5.1m), Jair Benítez ($5.0m) and FC Dallas recorded their second clean sheet in as many weeks. Sporting KC’s Matt Besler ($6.0m) and Houston’s Jermaine Taylor ($5.5m) also pefromed at a high level, helping secure clean sheets at home against the Montreal Impact and San Jose Earthquakes. Three other defenders tallied eight points in Round 5.

Midfielders (4)

Graham Zusi ($9.8m) and co-player of the week, Feilhaber ($7.8m), connected on a great goal late in the second half of Saturday’s game against the Montreal Impact. Johnson ($7.4m) and Hendry Thomas ($6.0m) had surprising performances in their 2-2 draw at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Colorado. This was the first Dream Team appearance for Portland and Colorado this season. Five other midfielders had eight points in Round 5.

Forwards (1)

Since Round 1 we have not seen outstanding production from the forward pool. In Round 1, three forwards produced double-digit outings, a feat we’ve only seen two other forwards accomplish since then. Péguy Luyindula ($7.5m) is the only forward represented this week even though three other forwards managed to post the same magic number. Luyindula was the only one who didn’t score, but his game-winning assist to Thierry Henry was definitely DT worthy.

Goalkeeper – Raúl Fernández (FC Dallas)

This is Fernández’s ($5.5m) first DT appearance. Chris Seitz ($4.7m) has made it tough for Schellas Hyndman to choose a starter, but this performance should dim talks of a change, for now at least.
