Paris St Germain will take a commanding lead into the second leg of their UEFA Cup last-32 tie against Wolfsburg next week thanks to Guillaume Hoarau's late double at the Parc des Princes.
The tall striker headed home twice in the final 11 minutes to give the Ligue 1 team a deserved first-leg cushion.
Perhaps just as importantly, PSG kept a clean sheet with Wolfsburg hardly threatening, especially after the break.
PSG, second in France's top flight, started promisingly as Peguy Luyindula headed Fabrice Pancrate's cross just wide, but their youthful, inexperienced midfield soon began to get over-run.
Wolfsburg's first chance fell to Sascha Riether in the 19th minute, but the midfielder lamely sidefooted wide Zvjezdan Misimovic's free-kick.
Josue and Sebastian Schindzielorz were then both off target with 25-yard shots, and it was beginning to become one-way traffic.
The hosts, though, regained their shape and should have broken the deadlock with one of two great chances towards the end of the half.
First, Hoarau scooped over an effort from 15 yards before Pancrate failed to get enough power on his finish after superb work down the left from Clement Chantome.
PSG began the second half as the ended the first, Chantome volleying fiercely straight at visiting goalkeeper Diego Benaglio and Hoarau heading over from six yards after shrugging off his marker at a set-piece.
Wolfsburg, who finished top of a qualifying group that included AC Milan, were suddenly relying on counter-attacks and from one of them, Yoshito Okubo - just on as a substitute - blazed over from inside the six-yard box.
The goal the French side deserved arrived 11 minutes from time, Jerome Rothen floating in a cross from the right and Hoarau beating Benaglio to the ball to head into an empty net.
And Hoarau ensured PSG will be strong favorites to progress into the last 16 by running onto Chantome's left-wing corner and planting home a powerful header from inside the six-yard box.
The France hopeful came close to completing his hat-trick moments later when his clipped effort struck the post.
