Genoa jump over Roma in Serie A table

Genoa picked up their second major scalp at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris this season with a 3-1 win over Roma on Wednesday night.

After beating AC Milan 10 days ago, the Rossoblu earned only their second win of the season at the expense of 10-man Roma, who were forced to play the last 22 minutes without their influential captain Daniele De Rossi.

Diego Milito was the hero once again for the home side as he scored twice to cement his place as the darling of the Genoa fans.

Giuseppe Sculli put them ahead in the fourth minute with De Rossi equalizing in the 28th before two second half goals from Milito sent Roma crashing to their second defeat of the season and saw Genoa move above them in the Serie A table.

Genoa got off to a flying start with Sculli putting them ahead in the fourth minute.

The Genoa striker beat John Arne Riise to Marco Rossi's cross and managed to nudge the ball past Roma goalkeeper Doni from close range.

Roma's indifferent start to the season seemed set to continue as Genoa took the game to them with Sculli trying his luck once again in the eighth minute with Doni this time making a save on the stretch.

A defensive mix-up almost let Roma in for the equaliser in the 23rd minute, but Genoa goalkeeper Rubinho spared his defenders' blushes.

Matteo Ferrari and Domenico Criscito both got in each other's way as they attempted to head De Rossi's lofted ball away and the ball fell kindly for Rodrigo Taddei, whose angled shot was tipped wide of the post by Rubinho.

This chance gave Roma some belief and they began to take control of the game and they were rewarded in the 28th minute with the equaliser.

De Rossi's first header from Mirko Vucinic's free-kick was blocked by Rubinho, but the Italy midfielder made no mistake with his second header.

The visitors were in the ascendancy, albeit without creating any danger to the Genoa goal, and the home fans were beginning to get frustrated with their team's lack of ambition.

The Rossoblu soon put a stop to that and Andrea Gasbarroni tested Doni once again.

De Rossi tried his luck from 30 yards and his shot did not miss the post by too much in the 56th minute before Jeremy Menez tried to tee up Vucinic, but Criscito was alert and cleared the danger.

Genoa moved back ahead on the hour mark as Milito converted Francesco Modesto's header just in front of Doni.

The linesman's flag was raised at the other end to deny Christian Panucci from bringing the Giallorossi level within minutes, although replays suggested the goal should have stood.

De Rossi, who had vehemently complained about Genoa's second goal to the point of being shown a yellow card, was given his marching orders in the 68th minute for a second bookable offense, but this seemed to lift Roma who, with 10 men, looked stronger than they had with 11.

Menez claimed a penalty when he went down after a clash with Ferrari, but the referee seemed to be right this time with his decision not to award a spot-kick.

Roma substitute Alberto Aquilani headed narrowly wide of the post from Cicinho's cross before Milito put the result beyond doubt.

He had a simple task of putting the ball into the back of the net after Raffaele Palladino delivered a low ball into his path just yards in front of goal, and he made no mistake for his third goal of the season.
