Fire fall to Wilmington Hammerheads in Open Cup action

Patrick Nyarko and the Fire will not win their fifth Open Cup title this season.

The Chicago Fire fell to the Wilmington Hammerheads 1-0 tonight in a third round Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match held at Legion Stadium in Wilmington, North Carolina. With the loss, the Fire have been eliminated from the annual tournament.

The Hammerheads opened scoring in the 37th minute as midfielder Kenny Bundy received a pass from defender Tim Karalexis and placed a ball past Fire goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra for the game-winning goal.

The Fire posted 15 shots against the Hammerheads but were unable to find the back of the net in the 1-0 loss.

The Fire return to MLS action on Saturday, July 4th as the team travels to Colorado to play the Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. CT.
