Scoring Summary:
FCD - Woolfolk 71'
Controlling the tempo and having possession of the ball for most of the match, FC Dallas took a younger lineup into their scrimmage with Shamrock and beat Rovers 1-0. In the 18th minute, Arturo Alvarez made a nice corner pass from the right side to Mario Torres. Torres, a Shamrock defender and goalkeeper all went up for the ball that Torres headed over the goal.
Rovers only had two real chances in the first half, but they were both good ones. A Shamrock player took a shot from 15 yards out that hit the left post and then rolled slowly to the goal line. FC Dallas goalkeeper Jeff Cassar quickly gathered the ball before it crossed the goalline in the 31st minute. Just a minute later, a Shamrock player was found all alone in front of an empty net after Cassar came out to play a long ball placed in the box. Cassar misplayed the pass and the Shamrock player, who was alone with the goal, shot a ball that hit the left post and went out.
During the second half, it was more of the same as FC Dallas controlled the match through possession of the ball. Then, in the 71st minute, they broke through for the lead. Alvarez blasted a shot from 10 yards out that the goalkeeper stopped, but could not hang on to. The rebound was collected by Corey Woolfolk, who made a nice move with a defender on his back and pushed the ball home for the match's only goal.
In the 79th minute, Clarence Goodson came on for Woolfolk, and played up top for the first time this year. Goodson played forward in college.
The final chance of the match came in the 85th minute when Philip Salyer made a nice run along the right sideline and found Arturo Alvarez behind him just outside the box. Alvarez gathered the ball and crushed a shot just outside the left post.
Assistant Coach Steve Morrow on how the lineup they put on the field performed today:
"I thought they performed very well. Right now, we're trying to get the roster match-fit and that's why we are putting out these different lineups. Today's game gave us a great chance to look at the younger players and for those players to try to prove themselves to us as well. Some of the players are starting to develop very fast. Aaron Pitchkolan and Drew Moor were good again today and are two in that younger group that are progressing very nicely."
Clarke on Eric Quill, whom the team sent home on Monday:
"He has a calf strain that is taking a little longer then what we first expected. It made more sense to get him back to Dallas and find out if there is anything else in there that we need to know about."
