Everton lose to River Plate in Canada

Brazilian striker Jo had a number of opportunities for Everton against River Plate.

Everton continued their pre-season campaign with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to River Plate of Argentina at the Commonwealth Stadium in Canada.

First Half

The Toffees started the game well, with Steven Pienaar threading the ball through to on-loan striker Jo, but his return pass was too strong for Pienaar to connect with.

The Brazilian himself then had a chance moments later with a free-kick, which was struck straight to River keeper Mario Vega, before Carlo Nash made a good stop from Rodrigo Archubi.

Tim Cahill then had a great chance to put the Toffees ahead, but his crisply struck shot was well saved again from Vega.

Mid-way through the first half however, the Toffees fell behind, as veteran River striker Ariel Ortega's delicate chip was enough to beat Nash and make the score 1-0 to the Argentine side after just 27 minutes.

River then went close again, after Nash misjudged a cross, but Matias Abelairas hit the post when it was easier to score.

Second Half

The Toffees began the second half well and went close when Jo latched on to Cahill's pass, but put his shot into the side netting.

Leighton Baines then went close for David Moyes' men, placing a free-kick just wide of the post before Nicolas Donigo's pile driver went close for the Argentine side.

Late substitute James Vaughan then had a penalty shout turned down by referee Mauricio Navarro, who waved away the Toffees' appeals after it seemed that the 21-year-old was shoved over in the box.

River however held out for the win, leaving Moyes to consider how his side lost the game.

The Toffees will now play an MLS All-Stars side on Wednesday, as they continue their pre-season campaign.
