D.C. United have added to their roster ahead of the 2016 season opener with the announcement on Thursday they have acquired goalkeeper Charlie Horton.
Horton was acquired from the New England Revolution, who received general allocation money from D.C. in a sign-and-trade deal. The 21-year-old most recently played for English Championship side Leeds United.
“Charlie is a talented young goalkeeper who has a bright future and we are very pleased to have him join us,” Dave Kasper, United general manager and VP of soccer operations, said in a team statement.
Horton was born in London, England, but raised in Cleveland. He has been a member of Peterborough United and Cardiff City in addition to Leeds United, and is a US U-23 international.
The player announced in November his wish to return to the US to play in MLS due to a "private family matter back home." With D.C., Horton will likely compete as Andrew Dykstra's primary backup with Travis Worra, while incumbent starter Bill Hamid recovers from a knee injury.
D.C. United will kick off their 2016 league campaign against the LA Galaxy on Sunday (10 pm ET, UniMás).
