One year in the books for the Chicago Fire and it’s time to move on for Diego Chaves.
A report in the Chilean media on Sunday claims that the 25-year-old Uruguayan striker has signed with Primera División side Palestino after he and the Fire mutually parted ways.
“Diego Chaves was signed for the 2011 campaign,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas on the club’s website. “We had conversations with Diego throughout the offseason, however, with recent signings of Rafael Robayo and Federico Puppo coming into the fold, it became difficult to bring him back. We wish him the best with his new club.”
In 29 regular season matches (19 starts) for Chicago in 2011, Chaves scored six goals and tallied one assist. He became the first player in club history to score in his first three regular season appearances.
Chaves, for his part, arrives at Palestino as one of the team’s biggest signings and is looking forward to the new challenge with the Santiago-based club, who finished 15th out of 18 teams in the recently concluded Campeonato Clausura.
“The idea is to put Palestino back in the playoffs and to go as far as possible,” Chaves told FansClick.com. “I come to the team looking to contribute and to score as many goals as possible.”
