American Exports: John Anthony Brooks gets start, but Hertha Berlin eliminated from German Cup

John Anthony Brooks celebrates his winner for Hertha Berlin

AMSTERDAM – A few Americans took part in domestic cup action on Tuesday, with John Anthony Brooks going the distance as Hertha Berlin dropped out of Germany's DfB-Pokal on penalties after a scoreless draw at Arminia Bielefeld.

Making his first start for the club since mid-September, Brooks drew a yellow card during his 120 solid minutes of play. However, the top-flight visitors were unable to break through against the 3. Liga leaders and dropped the shootout by a 4-2 count.

Elsewhere, Jann George went unused as Greuther Fürth fell out of the draw with a second-round loss at Kaiserslustern.

Over in England's Captial One Cup, Emerson Hyndman worked a decent full shift as Fulham suffered a 5-2 loss against round-of-16 visitors Derby County.

The US midfielder nearly opened the scoring after just two minutes when his 24-yard free kick buzzed the frame. The Cottagers led by two just before intermission, then proceeded to leak five goals inside a 17-minute span.

Finally, in Austria, a late own goal doomed Conor O'Brien's Wiener Neustadt in a tough 3-2 defeat away to ÖFB-Cup hosts RZ Pellets WAC.
