American Exports: Free agent midfielder Alejandro Bedoya pledges future to Ligue 1's Nantes FC

Alejandro Bedoya with Helsingborg

AMSTERDAM – Free agent US midfielder Alejandro Bedoya is unattached no more, inking a three-year deal to join Ligue 1 risers Nantes on Thursday.

Following completion of a "thumbs up" medical exam, the 26-year-old put pen to paper just over a week after his Helsingborg contract expired. Bedoya rejected offers from Grasshoppers, Hajduk Split, Heerenveen and Randers FC this summer to link up with the Canaries.

Bedoya arrived at Helsingborg last summer after an all-around depressing spell at Rangers and proceeded to score on his debut. In all, he notched 12 goals and nine assists in 34 appearances for the Reds.

When he debuts for Nantes, Bedoya will become the first American to play in Ligue 1 since Charlie Davies took the field for Sochaux in February of last year. Though the former Boston College ace began training with his new club on Friday, he will not be in the squad for Saturday's season opener at Bastia.
