AMSTERDAM - Aris FC loan outcast Freddy Adu has begun a brief audition with 2.Bundesliga strugglers Ingolstadt by working the second half of Thursday's friendly win over Kickers Offenbach at their winter training camp in Turkey.
The 21-year-old, who barring a transfer remains Benfica property through the summer of 2012, is initially slated to be with the Die Schanzer through the weekend.
"Freddy came yesterday at night to the team" Ingolstadt press officer Oliver Samwald told MLSsoccer.com. "He is here on a trial and the coach wants to take a look at him."
"Freddy has had one training and one half at the game against Offenbach so far, so it will take a few more days to see if he can make it."
Ingolstadt, who were promoted this season, currently stand next to last in the table. The club's main mission this winter is to upgrade the attack, which has scored multiple goals just once in the last 14 games.
"Since we search for an offense man with experience and scoring qualities, I cannot give you any prognosis if Freddy is the right player at the moment," said Samwald. "He will stay until Sunday with the team anyway, then there should be a decision."
Adu has also spent time training with Danish side Randers FC and Swiss outfit FC Sion since being deemed unnecessary by Aris boss Héctor Cúper prior to the season.
The Greek club has been trying to legally get out of the remainder of the American's season loan deal. If that happens, owners Benfica have made it known they will send the player out on another loan or perhaps even authorize a free transfer away.
Should Adu sign with Ingolstadt, he would become the third American to suit up for the club. Current defender Amaechi Igwe was a U.S. Under-20 teammate of Adu's and former Real Salt Lake defender Ian Joy played there during the 2009/10 season.
Earlier this week, the Bavarians were also linked by German daily TZ with interest in 1860 Munich striker Kenny Cooper as part of their search for goals.
