Three MLS players were in action in Africa Cup of Nations play, as qualifiers for the tournament rolled on. Here's who took the field and how they did in Monday's matches.
South Africa 4, São Tomé and Príncipe 2
Group C
It was an explosive day for South Africa in Group C play against São Tomé and Príncipe, as they found the net four times on their way to a 4-2 win that has them level with Ghana atop Group C with nine points from four matches. South Africa got two goals apiece from Themba Zwane and Percy Tau as they edged closer to qualification for the tournament.
FC Cincinnati's Kamohelo Mokotjo started South Africa's last match São Tomé and Príncipe -- a 2-0 victory on November 13 -- but was rotated out of the starting XI for this contest. South Africa is currently scheduled to play the final two matches of its ACON qualifying in March.
Uganda 0, South Sudan 1
Group B
It was tougher sledding for MLS veteran Micheal Azira and his Uganda side, which fell 1-0 in a Group B upset after a 36th-minute penalty kick and a red card proved to be too much to overcome.
Azira started the contest on the bench, but was subbed on after the red card and helped his team keep South Sudan off the scoresheet the rest of the match. Unfortunately, the short-handed side couldn't find the net themselves and took their first qualifying loss. Uganda remain in second place on seven points from four matches, one behind Burkina Faso.
Mozambique 0, Cameroon 2
Group F
Philadelphia Union defender Olivier Mbaizo registered another start for Cameroon in his country's 2-0 victory over Mozambique, after he also started the first matchup between the sides -- a 4-1 victory on Thursday.
The victory keeps Mbaizo and his undefeated Cameroon side atop Group F, where they've separated themselves from the pack with 10 points from four matches.
