An intelligent and experienced central midfielder who is expected to be a strong upgrade for FC Cincinnati in their second season in MLS.
Outside MLS: The midfielder has made 338 career first-team appearances, including 285 starts, scoring 12 goals and adding 36 assists in 12 professional seasons in England, the Netherlands and South Africa. Mokotjo joins FC Cincinnati after playing for SuperSport United (2008-09), Feyenoord (2009-13), Excelsior (2009-10), PEC Zwolle (2013-14), FC Twente (2014-17) and Brentford FC (2017-20).
Mokotjo’s professional career began in 2008 when he was 16 years old. He was promoted to South African club SuperSport United’s first team after spending more than five years in the club’s academy. After debuting for SuperSport in the 2008-'09 season, he earned a contract with Feyenoord following a three-month trial. He spent eight seasons in the Netherlands before making the move to the English Championship with Brentford.
International: Mokotjo represents South Africa internationally and has earned 13 caps to date. He made his senior international debut in an international friendly against Spain on Nov. 19, 2013. Mokotjo made five appearances during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and has also featured in FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
