Former US men’s national team legend Steve Cherundolo has been named an assistant coach of the Germany Under-15 national team, the German Football Association announced.

Cherundolo played his entire professional career in Germany, making nearly 400 appearances for Hannover 96 from 1999-2014. He also served as the team’s captain ahead of the 2011-12 season and earned the nickname "the mayor of Hannover."

He made 87 appearances for the USMNT, competing in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the 2010 World Cup and captained the squad at the 2009 Concacaf Gold Cup. Cherundolo would have easily surpassed the 100-cap plateau if not for chronic knee injuries.

After his retirement, Cherundolo served as a Hannover 96 assistant coach, while also coaching the club’s U-15 team and later the U-17s. He’s also served as an assistant with Stuttgart and the USMNT for a brief spell under then interim-coach Dave Sarachan.
