New York Red Bulls 1, New York City FC 0 | 2020 MLS Match Recap

A Kyle Duncan goal after Video Review was the difference in the latest edition of the Hudson River Derby as the New York Red Bulls defeated New York City FC, 1-0, Thursday night at Red Bull Arena.

The lone goal came just before the hour mark as Duncan’s swerving shot was mishandled by Sean Johnson, with the ball caroming off the NYCFC’s goalkeeper’s hands and toward the goal.

Johnson tracked back and looked to have saved it before the entire ball went over the line. But referee Allen Chapman ruled it was a goal after Video Review.

NYCFC had the better chances early, but veteran goalkeeper Ryan Meara was only pressed to make a save once, denying Heber in the 31st minute.

After the goal, the Red Bulls locked down defensively and nearly had a stoppage-time insurance goal through Kaku.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: New York is red, at least for one night and it was three massive points for a Red Bulls squad coming off disappointing results at the MLS is Back Tournament. NYCFC were done in by a rare Johnson gaffe and they leave Harrison with a 1W-5L record only in front of winless Inter Miami CF in the Eastern Conference.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: There was just one goal and it came in controversial fashion.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Duncan gets the glory for the goal, but he was also part of a defensive unit that locked down the NYCFC attack in the final hour.
