US national team left back Antonee Robinson is on his way to Premier League-bound Fulham from Wigan Athletic, continuing the long tradition of Americans to turn out for the West London club. The two clubs confirmed the deal on Thursday.

British media put the fee paid by Fulham in the £1.9-2 million range. Robinson, who turned 23 earlier this month, will join compatriot Tim Ream as American players on the books at Craven Cottage. Midfielder Luca de la Torre was also part of the Fulham squad until two weeks ago, when he signed with Heracles Almelo in the Netherlands.

The tradition of US players at "Fulhamerica" goes dates back nearly 20 years, with national team stars like Brian McBride, Carlos Bocanegra and Clint Dempsey all playing big roles for the West London club.

Robinson, born in the UK to an American father, has featured seven times for the senior US national team since making his debut in May 2018. At the club level, he has been a regular starter in the Championship for the last three years, for Bolton Wanderers and then Wigan Athletic. He had been close to a move to Italian giants AC Milan in the winter 2020 transfer window, only to see the deal fall through at the last minute.
