Report: Chicago Fire FC to sign Argentine defensive midfielder Gaston Gimenez as Designated Player

Chicago Fire FC are set to bring in a new Designated Player, according to reports out of Argentina.

Per Agustin Sileo of Velez Y Su Mundo, Chicago have agreed to terms on a deal to bring Argentine defensive midfielder Gaston Gimenez to the club on a DP contract. The 28-year-old currently plays for Velez Sarsfield in Argentina and would join Chicago at the end of the current Superliga campaign, reportedly for a $4.3 million transfer fee. Sileo had previously reported links between Gimenez and the Fire back in January.

Gimenez has spent his entire professional career in Argentina to date, with 38 league appearances with Velez Sarsfield since joining the club in 2018. He began his youth career with Almirante Brown before breaking in with the first team and scoring four goals in 88 appearances from 2011-2014 before stints with Atletico Tucuman, Godoy Cruz and Estudiantes. He picked up one senior cap with the Argentine national team back in 2018.

Gimenez's skillset would make him a logical candidate to slot in for departed midfielder Dax McCarty, who was traded to expansion side Nashville SC during the offseason. He would be the second DP signed to Chicago's roster leading up to the club's 2020 MLS campaign, along with Slovenian forward Robert Beric, who signed last month.
