Player Playlist: Paxton Pomykal

JLab - Player Playlist - Paxton Pomykal

Dallas native Paxton Pomykal was called up to FC Dallas in early 2016 at only 16 years old. He made his debut with the USMNT in early September of this year. As fans, we hear a lot about his development as a player, but we caught up with the midfielder to chat about the development of his taste in music.

Thanks to his Texan parents, Pomykal was raised on country music and U2. He inherited a big appreciation for the classics from them, and grew up with a love for American pop that continues today. Since joining the first team, though, thanks to his teammates, he’s developed an appreciation for Spanish music.

We discussed all things music with the rising star, and, like any teenager, he had strong opinions on who should be in charge of the AUX cord.

What type of music do you listen to before a game?

Hip-hop, pop music, anything popular on the radio.

What is it about hip-hop that you like?

The songs are vibrant and happy. They get me in a good vibe, a good mood before the games.

How does music help you get in the right frame of mind before a game?

I think it helps me calm down and focus ... it helps me chill and not get too worked up about what’s going to happen in the next 90 minutes.

What’s your favorite song right now?

Right now, “Lost in Japan” by Shawn Mendes. The remix version.

What is your earliest musical memory?

I went to a U2 concert when I was 7 or 8 ... my dad is a huge U2 fan so I love classic rock music as well. I’ve since become a big U2 fan myself.

What’s your favorite genre of music?

In general, probably country. Maybe country and Indie pop. They’re both chill genres. I’m from Dallas, so my mom loves country. That’s where I got it from.

Is there any country music played in the FC Dallas locker room?

They’ve played some, but I’m sure it’s just to make fun of me. If I ever tried to put it on for real it would definitely be turned off in about ten seconds.

In the locker room, who should be in charge of the AUX cord?

Probably Ema Twumasi. He has some good music.

And who shouldn’t have the AUX cord?

Reggie Cannon should definitely not have the AUX cord. He only plays Eminem.

What’s the most embarrassing song on your playlist?

Definitely Halsey, Justin Beiber, and T-Swift. Nothing too crazy, but it might be surprising to some to see those on my playlist.

What are some artists you’ve discovered through your teammates?

Spanish music, definitely. I did not know any spanish music, and half of our music in the locker room is in Spanish now.
