One year after reaching the semifinals for the 13th time in club history, the Chicago Fire are hoping to take a step further this year and win an MLS record fifth U.S Open Cup title, entering the competition in the fourth round, where they will meet USL Championship side Saint Louis FC Tuesday night in St. Charles, Missouri.

Saint Louis FC

Saint Louis FC needed penalties to advance to the third round, edging host Des Moines Menace from USL League Two 3-1 in the shootout. Kyle Greig put St. Louis in front in the 14th minute before Nicolas Perea equalized from the penalty spot for Des Moines in the 39th minute.

Paris Gee and Guy Abend scored inside the opening six minutes to help lead St. Louis FC to a 3-1 win over Forward Madison from USL League One in the third round. After Don Smart pulled Forward Madison within a goal, Russell Cicerone put the game away with a 72nd-minute goal.

Chicago Fire

The Fire hope to build on their rich Open Cup tradition; they are tied with the Seattle Sounders and Sporting Kansas City for most titles by an MLS team at four, having won in 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2006. Last year they fell to the host Philadelphia Union in the semifinals.

They enter the competition on a four-match MLS winless streak after falling to Atlanta United 2-0 on June 1.

This is the second all-time meeting, with the Fire winning 1-0 in the fourth round of the 2017 U.S. Open Cup on a Luis Solignac goal in the 27th minute.
