The Ohio state senate overwhelmingly approved a bill on Thursday that included a proposed $15 million in spending that would go towards a new Columbus Crew SC stadium project.

Cleveland.com reported the state senators voted 29-2 to approve a "Christmas tree bill" of spending for several projects, which was first passed in state house. The bill will next to go Gov. John Kasich's desk for approval.

The legislators approved the $15 million in state funds for a proposed new Crew SC stadium, to go alongside $50 million each from the city of Columbus and Franklin County, per the report.

The stadium project was approved earlier this week by the Columbus city council. The proposal calls for a new venue for the team to be built where the Olentangy and Scioto rivers meet downtown in the city.

These plans are a key aspect for a group led by Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam and Dr. Peter H. Edwards, Jr., who are seeking to acquire Crew SC. If a new stadium is built downtown, at a projected $230 million cost, MAPFRE Stadium, where the club currently plays their home games, will be renovated into a training ground for the team and a community sports park.
