Foot surgery sidelines DC United center back Kofi Opare for rest of season

Kofi Opare - DC United

D.C. United announced on Friday that defender Kofi Opare had surgery on his left foot and is expected to be out of action for 4-5 months.

The surgery, to repair the peroneal tendon, will keep him out for the rest of the 2018 season as well, as D.C. United finish their MLS regular season slate on Sunday as part of Decision Day presented by AT&T against the Chicago Fire (4:30 pm ET | TV & Streaming Info), and then play in the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs, which begin next week.

Opare, 28, made 11 appearances this season for D.C., most of those coming between late-July and mid-September. He has made 65 appearances for the team since joining during the 2014 season. In his absence, Frederic Brillant has taken over the starting center back role next to Steven Birnbaum. The former New York City FC defender has started the last six games for United, five of which were wins.
