MLS, adidas and Parley use Snapchat to bring awareness to protecting oceans

New York (April 19, 2018)
Continuing their efforts to raise widespread awareness and inspire action around the harmful impact of marine plastic pollution, Major League Soccer, adidas and Parley for the Oceans have created a unique immersive augmented reality experience using Snapchat's Lens Studio.

This custom lens, available to Snapchat users across the country and at those MLS stadiums hosting games this Earth Day weekend, will bring to life the majestic beauty of the ocean with a massive 3D whale jumping out of the background making a “big splash” with those watching.

Starting at 7 p.m. EST on April 20, the experience will be available in select cities (Columbus, OH; Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; Kansas City, KS; Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY; Orlando, FL; Portland, OR; Salt Lake City, UT; Seattle, WA; and Montreal, Canada) as well as for any Snapchat user who finds the lens in their Snapchat carousel. For those at the MLS matches, fans can find the QR code listed below as well as on signs throughout each stadium and on MLS and clubs’ socials channels which can be scanned to immediately save the lens to their Snapchat profile for 24 hours.

Similar to the
just-announced collaboration
between Major League Soccer, adidas and Parley for the Oceans to create full customized uniforms built of technical yarns made by using Parley Ocean Plastic™, this use of augmented reality illustrates innovative efforts to educate consumers on the movement to end harmful plastic pollution and protect the oceans.

The main goal of the collaboration is to end the use of plastic by reinventing and replacing it with eco-innovative alternatives, and these jerseys carry this message to soccer fans across the country. This Earth Day week, everyone is invited to join MLS, adidas and Parley in their shared pledge to intercept plastic before it gets into our oceans.

About Parley for the Oceans
Parley for the Oceans is the global network where creators, thinkers and leaders from the creative industries, brands, governments and environmental groups come together to raise awareness for the beauty and fragility of the oceans and collaborate on projects that can end their destruction. The organization has formed alliances with major corporations including adidas, Anheuser Busch InBev (Corona), Intel; the United Nations; and collaborators spanning the worlds of science, art, fashion, design, entertainment, sports, and space and ocean exploration.

To address the fast-growing threat of marine plastic pollution, Parley puts forth a flexible, scalable strategy: Parley AIR — Avoid, Intercept, Redesign. The organization gained global attention by rebranding sustainability into ‘Eco Innovation’, and through the invention of Ocean Plastic™: a range of premium materials created from upcycled plastic waste intercepted from oceans, shorelines, and in coastal communities. The material provides a replacement for virgin plastic as well as a catalyst for awareness and funding of initiatives focused on longer-term, source-based solutions, including: Education and Communication, Direct Impact, Research and Development, and Eco Innovation.

During the Parley x Biofabricate conference held in New York on December 7, 2017, Parley for the Oceans announced a partnership with the Biofabricate summit and launched the ‘Material Revolution’ to boost the development of new materials that can replace current plastic and drive the success of the third pillar of Parley AIR: Redesign.
