After hosting a special edition of the Copa América tournament in 2016, could the US national team be set to play in the next edition of the South American regional championship?
That's the word out of Brazil on Friday, with Globo Esporte reporting the USMNT is being considered to participate in the 2019 Copa América, to be played in Brazil.
According to the report, the tournament would have a 16-team field, with negotiations underway to invite the United States, Mexico and a third Concacaf nation, alongside three teams from Asia. The six North American and Asian teams would join South America's 10 national teams.
Prior to the 2016 Copa América Centenario tournament, the USMNT had played in Copa América tournaments in the past, with their previous appearances coming in 1993, 1995 and 2007. Should the US participate in 2019, the Copa América would likely be back-to-back with the Gold Cup, Concacaf's biennial national team championship. That would likely mean that the USMNT would need different rosters for each tournament.
