LA Galaxy officially sign former San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham

The LA Galaxy have made the long-awaited move for David Bingham official, announcing Wednesday that they have signed the former San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper to a contract.

The Galaxy had previously acquired Bingham's rights in a trade with the Earthquakes on Dec. 18, 2017, sending their in-state rivals $100,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) and $100,000 in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM). The Quakes will also receive an additional $50,000 of GAM if Bingham hits certain performance incentives this season.

ESPN's Jeff Carlisle, who broke the news of Bingham's deal on Monday, reported that Bingham signed a two-year deal plus a club option for a third, and is poised to earn around $1 million over the three years.

“David is a reliable option for us in goal and we’re excited to add him to the roster,” said LA Galaxy head coach Sigi Schmid in a statement released by the team. “He brings a wealth of MLS experience and we believe he is a player that will be part of our success in 2018."

The 28-year-old Bingham signed with MLS as a Generation adidas player following the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and landed in San Jose via a weighted lottery. He earned the Quakes' starting job in 2015, starting all 34 games in two consecutive seasons and gaining an MLS All-Star nod in 2016. However, he lost the starting job to Andrew Tarbell towards the end of the 2017 campaign, portending his departure from the Bay Area.

Internationally, Bingham has earned three caps with the US men's national team. He made his debut in a 1-0 shutout victory over Canada on Feb. 6, 2016 and also featured in friendlies against New Zealand and Jamaica.

Bingham is the second addition to the Galaxy roster this week following the acquisition of midfielder Perry Kitchen and the fourth in their offseason rebuild, joining defenders Rolf Feltscher and Jorgen Skjelvik as new arrivals at the StubHub Center. Carlisle also reported Monday that the Galaxy had also reached a deal with midfielder Servando Carrasco, whom they selected in December's Re-Entry Draft.
