Alphonso Davies among several MLS players to join Canada U-23 squad

Just after Canada Soccer made the surprising announcement that John Herdman would replace Octavio Zambrano as their men’s national team head coach, they have unveiled their roster for an upcoming U-23 camp.

And Herdman, who will oversee all youth teams from U-14 up, will have a lot of MLS talent to evaluate there as Vancouver Whitecaps rising star Alphonso Davies, who excelled in his first senior team call-ups last summer, was among those selected for a camp that runs from today until Jan. 18 in Orlando.

Other MLS players who got the call were goalkeeper James Pantemis, defender Thomas Meilleur-Giguère, and midfielders Shamit Shome and David Choinière of the Montreal Impact, as well as FC Dallas forward Adonijah Reid.

Like Davies, Pantemis and Choinière also made their first appearances with Canada’s senior team in 2017.

Other players with MLS ties on the roster are: Terique Mohammed (Toronto FC Academy), Julian Dunn-Johnson (Toronto FC II), Liam Fraser (Toronto FC II), Shaan Hundal (Toronto FC II), Luca Uccello (Toronto FC II), Aidan Daniels (Toronto FC II), Gabriel Wiethaeuper-Balbinotti (Montreal Impact Academy), Clément Bayiha (Montreal Impact Academy), Mathieu Choinière (Montreal Impact Academy), Daniel Kinumbe (Montreal Impact Academy), and Thomas Hasal (Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-18 Residency).

The Canada U-23s will play exhibition matches against local side S.I.M.A. and Colombia’s Club Atlético Nacional during the camp.
