Loaned out to IFK Goteborg the last six months, it appeared Vancouver Whitecaps FC Homegrown defender Sam Adekugbe would be making a permanent switch to the Swedish side this winter. But that may not turn out to be the case after all.

Patrick Johnston of The Province reported on Wednesday that Adekugbe's status is "in limbo" because Goteborg did not ultimately pick up the purchase option on the left back's loan deal, as "they couldn't finalize details with the Whitecaps."

While previous reports indicated Goteborg, which finished in 10th place in the 2017 Allsvenskan season in the 16-team league, were eager to bring Adekugbe aboard permanently, Johnston reports a potential deal may not be buried yet, even though the purchase option on the original loan expired on December 31.

Adekugbe, 22, was a Homegrown signing of the Whitecaps in 2013. He's played 16 MLS regular season games to date in his career, and is also a Canadian international, playing in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Previously, he spent the 2016-17 season on loan with English club Brighton & Hove Albion.
