Colvey, Diop selected during MLS Waiver Draft

Colorado, Montreal target national team defensive talent from New Zealand, Senegal

NEW YORK (Wednesday, December 13, 2017) – A pair of defensive selections took place during Wednesday’s MLS Waiver Draft, with the Colorado Rapids choosing defender Kip Colvey and the Montreal Impact selecting goalkeeper Clement Diop.

After the LA Galaxy and D.C. United passed on their first-round picks, the Rapids targeted 23-year-old New Zealander Colvey, who made three starts and four appearances during the 2016 season for the San Jose Earthquakes. This past year, Colvey was loaned to San Jose’s United Soccer League affiliate Reno 1868 FC.

After Minnesota United FC and Orlando City SC passed on their Waiver Draft picks, the Montreal Impact selected the 24-year-old Diop, who made 15 starts for the LA Galaxy in 2017. Diop also was the regular backup goalkeeper for Senegal during the FIFA World Cup Qualifying stage as his country qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The Waiver Draft consisted of players who had been waived by their clubs but did not meet the minimum years of service requirement for the Re-Entry Draft or Free Agency. Under-contract players selected in the Waiver Draft are automatically added to the drafting club’s roster. Clubs that claimed out-of-contract players are required to issue a genuine offer to the selected player.

There were 59 players available for the Waiver Draft. Players who were not selected are now free to sign with the team of their choice.
