New England Revolution 2, New York Red Bulls 3 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

Sean Davis - NYRB - heads ball as Lee Nguyen - NE - challenges - 7-5-17

Substitute Gonzalo Veron's 90th minute goal for the visiting New York Red Bulls shocked the host New England Revolution and the Gillette Stadium crowd as it snatched a victory for the Red Bulls in most dramatic fashion.

Veron, who came on late in the second half to replace striker Bradley Wright-Phillips, ran on to a pass from Felipe and slotted it in the far corner past New England 'keeper Cody Cropper. It broke a 2-2 that had been forged after Daniel Royer converted a penalty in the 55th minute. New England had taken a 2-1 lead into halftime, on goals by Teal Bunbury and Lee Nguyen, sandwiching a spectacular volley from Wright-Phillips.

Three Things

  1. RECORD BREAKER: Red Bulls manager Jesse Marsch became the franchise's all-time leader in MLS coaching victories – regular season and playoffs combined â€“ with the win, his 53rd for the club. He moved past Octavio Zambrano, who had 52 wins for the then-New York/New Jersey MetroStars from 2000 through 2002. Marsch has been Red Bulls coach since replacing the popular Mike Petke before the 2015 season. He was named Coach of the Year that year.
  2. SACHA DIFFICULT SEASON: Red Bulls captain Sacha Kljestan, who had 14 goals and 34 assists the last two seasons, has yet to score this season, through 17 games. Kljestan, who has six assists, had just one shot against New England, and no shots on goal. For the season, he has three shots on goal and 19 shots altogether.
  3. SEE YOU NEXT WEEK: The two teams will meet again in eight days, as they clash in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals on Thursday, July 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Harvard University. Given the six yellow cards the teams combined for in this game, they probably aren't necessarily thrilled about seeing each other again so soon.
