Portland Timbers forward Fanendo Adi voted Alcatel MLS Player of the Week

NEW YORK (Tuesday, June 13, 2017) – Portland Timbers forward Fanendo Adi was voted the Alcatel MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 15th week of the 2017 MLS season.

Adi scored a brace in leading Portland to a 2-0 victory over FC Dallas on Saturday at Providence Park, recording his 13th multi-goal effort for the Timbers since 2014, the second-best total in MLS over that span. The 26-year-old ranks tied for third in the Golden Boot Standings with eight goals scored this season to go along with two assists. Following its second consecutive victory, Portland now sits in second place in the Western Conference standings with 24 points (7-5-3 overall record).

The Nigerian-born forward put Portland ahead 1-0 in the 32nd minute with a powerful run into the box, keeping his balance despite contact from a defender just long enough to send off a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez  (Watch Goal).

Adi displayed a great bit of skill and patience to score his second goal in the 72nd minute to give the Timbers a 2-0 advantage. After receiving a pass from Dairon Asprilla in the box, Adi feinted a left-footed shot to fool Gonzalez before switching to his right foot and firing a powerful shot into the back of the net from close range (Watch Goal).

The Portland Timbers begin U.S. Open Cup action against Seattle Sounders FC on Tuesday, June 13 at Starfire Sports Complex (10:30 p.m. ET. YouTube), before returning to MLS play against the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, June 17 (9:30 p.m. ET, MLS LIVE).

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
