Goal of the Matchday

Montreal's Blerim Dzemaili wins AT&T MLS Goal of the Week for Week 14

Blerim Dzemaili’s first MLS goal was one to remember.

The new Montreal midfielder opened his account to give the Impact an important 1-0 win against the New York Red Bulls at Stade Saputo on Saturday night. On Thursday, he was honored for his strike, winning AT&T MLS Goal of the Week for Week 14.

Dzemaili, who joined Montreal as a Designated Player from Italian club Bologna in May, had a goal disallowed for offside in the first half, but found the back of the net in the 67th minute to give the Impact their 1-0 victory. Midfielder Patrice Bernier started the move, playing a quick free kick to Dzemaili on the left flank. The Swiss international immediately found Ignacio Piatti for an excellent give-and-go, running onto Piatti’s return pass inside the area and firing home with his first touch.

The strike won 44 percent of the Goal of the Week vote. New England’s Diego Fagundez and ColumbusJustin Meram tied for second with 21 percent of the vote, Portland’s Diego Valeri finished fourth with 10 percent of the tally and Salt Lake’s Joao Plata rounded out the field with 5 percent of the vote.

Montreal and Dzemaili will return to action on Saturday at Sporting Kansas City (8 pm ET | TVA Sports in Canada, MLS LIVE in the US).
