Houston Dynamo, FC Dallas to honor Dallas PD ahead of US Open Cup match

Houston Dynamo, FC Dallas stand for anthems at BBVA Compass Stadium - 7/20/16

The Houston Dynamo and the Houston Police Department are asking Dynamo fans to stand with Dallas at Wednesday’s US Open Cup quarterfinal between the Dynamo and FC Dallas at BBVA Compass Stadium (8:30 pm ET; YouTube).

The Dynamo announced on Tuesday that Houston police officers will be stationed at each entry gate at BBVA Compass Stadium prior to Wednesday’s match, inviting fans to donate to the Line of Duty fund, which benefits the families of the Dallas officers who were killed in the line of duty on Thursday, July 7.

Additionally, starters for both the Dynamo and FCD will be led onto the field prior to kickoff by uniformed members of the Houston and Dallas Police Departments. The teams will join together for a photo with the officers prior to the start of the match.

The Dynamo will also hold a moment of silence before kickoff to honor the officers killed in Dallas, as well as the Baton Rouge, Lousiana and Bellaire, Texas officers who died in the line of duty last week.

“While we are fierce rivals on the field, it’s important to remember that we are all neighbors at the end of the day,” Dynamo president Chris Canetti said in a statement. “When you see people hurting, you want to help, and this is just a small way for us to show the people of Dallas that Houston is here for them and that we support them.”

FC Dallas supporters honored the fallen officers during FCD's 3-1 win against Chicago on Saturday, falling silent for a minute during the match and displaying several banners dedicated to the five officers who were killed in the July 7 attack.
