Christian Pulisic scores first career US national team goal against Bolivia

Christian Pulisic's rapid rise shows no signs of slowing down.

A month after scoring his first Bundesliga goal for Borussia Dortmund, the 17-year-old attacker became the United States men's national team's youngest goalscorer in the modern era by slotting home the American's final goal in a 4-0 win against Bolivia on Saturday night in Kansas City. New England Revolution forward Juan Agudelo was the previous record holder.

Pulisic entered the game in the 63rd minute, and his debut strike came just six minutes later. The final touch was a simple side-foot finish inside the right post after Jermaine Jones and Darlington Nagbe combined at the top of the 18-yard box, creating space for the latter to set up the teenager for a historic goal.

Pulisic made his senior international debut as a substitute in the US’s 4-0 World Cup qualifying win against Guatemala on March 29. He scored two goals in nine Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund after he was promoted to the club’s first team in January.

Though he's a recent addition to the senior team, the Pennsylvania native says focused on earning a starting spot at this summer's Copa America Centenario. The tournament kicks off on Friday as the US meet Colombia in Santa Clara, California (9:30 pm ET, FS1).

“That’s what I’m pushing for,” he said after the USMNT's 1-0 win against Ecuador. “We have 23 very strong players. Of course everyone wants to start. That’s the goal, but I just want to be successful with the team. Whether that’s start or that’s coming off the bench that’s fine by me.”
