MLS Fantasy Rewind: Crew SC-Impact thriller steals show in Round 9

Ignacio Piatti celebrates his goal with Montreal Impact head coach Mauro Biello

This week’s MLS Fantasy dream team was more than usual a microcosm of the storylines that permeated the games played in Round 9. Columbus Crew SC and the Montreal Impact played to a very loud stalemate, while some returning players made immediate impacts on their squads.

All the principals from the “Grumble in Columbo” were top fantasy earners this round, with Kei Kamara and Federico Higuain making the star squad with their respective braces. The Impact comeback was worth more fantasy points, however, as Didier Drogba and Ignacio Piatti were the top point scorers at their position.

Two players made the dream team with exclamation marks still sitting underneath their gold stars. RJ Allen returned from a lateral ankle sprain and earned a clean sheet in his second start of the season. His New York City FC teammate Ronald Matarrita was the top point earner amongst defenders. Also returning from injury and earning top points was Robbie Keane, who scored a brace in his first appearance since knee surgery at the end of March.

Rounding out the Dream Team were Seattle’s Erik Friberg, Vancouver’s Christian Bolanos, Colorado’s Axel Sjoberg and Houston’s Tyler Deric.

Caleb Cerney’s fantasy squad Rave Green managed 116 points in Round 9 to be our top point getter. Captaining Drogba was a great move, and appearances by Friberg, Piatti and Higuain were smart calls. Congratulations on the top score and enjoy your prize!

Fill my eyes, with that double vision

Lots to keep in mind this week, so let’s get to it.

  • Five games on Wednesday, eight teams are on a double match week: Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, Portland, Kansas City and Vancouver

  • The transfer deadline for Round 10 is Wednesday, May 11 at 7 pm ET

  • A short turnaround means it’s important to mind the Injury Report

So who do I have my eyes on for the next round? The Union get LA on short rest after a cross-country trip, and after the Galaxy showed signs of second-half fatigue on national TV Sunday. At the very least I expect goals in their two games this round, so I’ve got Chris Pontius and C.J. Sapong on my radar.

The Fire defense have looked a good fantasy option since their three straight clean sheets earlier in the season, and now it’s a great time to add center back Jonathan Campbell to your fantasy squads. Inexpensive – and a goal scorer his last time out.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the good work Jermaine Jones has done for the Colorado Rapids since his return. With three goals and two assists in four appearances, he’s certainly an option for captaincy.

How’d you do last round? How are you preparing for the big week ahead? Let us know!
