Portland Timbers defender Liam Ridgewelldid not play in Portland’s 2-1 loss at the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday, and the team captain indicated in a tweet prior to kickoff that it was due to a hamstring injury suffered in training:

Jamie Goldberg reported Sunday nThe Oregonian that Timbers coach Caleb Porter confirmed the 31-year-old Ridgewell would miss 4-to-6 weeks.

Ridgewell, who played five games while on-loan to English Championship club Brighton this winter, started the Timbers’ opening day win against Columbus Crew SC, playing the full 90 at center back. He was replaced in the lineup in San Jose by Zarek Valentin, who slotted in at left back with Jermaine Taylor pushing from the left into the middle.

He joined the Timbers midway through the 2014 season, and played 32 regular season matches for Portland last year. He started five of six playoff games in Portland's run to MLS Cup 2015, scoring one goal in the first leg of the Western Conference Championship series.
