German-American striker Andrew Wooten is set to be called into the US national team camp for next month's friendlies against Peru and Brazil, according to a report in German publication Bild.
Wooten has shot out of the gates in the opening weeks of the new 2.Bundesliga season, scoring a league-leading five goals for Sandhausen, who stand in a surprising fourth place with a perfect 3-0 record after three weeks of play.
Dubbed a “SenSANDtion” by the press, Sandhausen are one of the second division's smallest clubs, and came into the season targeting survival as their primary goal. But Wooten's productive chemistry with strike partner Aziz Bouhaddouz has turned heads around Germany – and, it seems, beyond.
Bild claims the 25-year-old dual national has already been called by USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann, but US Soccer officials say the process hasn't progressed that far. The Yanks will next gather in Washington, ahead of a September 4 friendly against Peru at RFK Stadium.
“No one has received an invitation to camp yet,” US Soccer spokesman Michael Kammarman told MLSsoccer.com on Monday. “The roster will be announced just prior to the start of camp in D.C.”
FIFA protocol requires that provisional player releases be sent out to clubs 15 days prior to the start of international match windows, to inform them that a player could be called up by his or her national team. As a result, releases are often sent to clubs regarding players who are not selected to their country's final rosters. US Soccer does not release or confirm provisional player lists.
