MLS Fantasy Doctor: Analyzing the all-important second game of double game weeks

I would like to take a moment at the beginning to address a flaw in current MLS Fantasy logic.

When picking players with a double game week, rather than considering their midweek opponent, it’s more important to analyze the second match of the week.

Last week, I correctly called Orlando City worth your time and energy. They then went out and put six players on the weekly Dream Team. When I wrote that, I had no idea Bruce Arena was planning on resting one of the best center backs in MLS, but there we are. In MLS, expect the unexpected.

Outside of the Week 10 drought, midweek matches have been full of goals thus far in the MLS season.

But both Sporting Kansas City and the New England Revolution – who face off Wednesday night (8pm ET, ESPN2, ESPN Deportes) – have tough matchups this weekend. Kansas City have to travel to Seattle to take on the Sounders, while New England play host to Eastern Conference leader D.C. United.

Which players are currently under the MLS Fantasy radar? Teal Bunbury ($7.6m) has been in decent form recently but is only selected by 1.6 percent of owners. Last week, he had five key passes from his right-side position, one of three bonus points he earned. With a goal or an assist this week, he could be a double-digit guy.

Balking at Dom Dwyer’s price tag? Charlie Davies ($8.9m) can get you double-digit points at a bargain. His four-match goalscoring streak ended last weekend, as Toronto FC held him to just one shot inside the penalty area. Still, as the point man in New England’s attack, you know he won’t be held goalless for long.

Will any of this help this week’s patient?

Cory Brown emailed in this question, which I’m sure many users can relate to. Having already played the wildcard to gear up for a weekday slate, tweaks have to be made.

Dear MLS Fantasy Doctor,
I used up my Wildcard last week in order to prepare for the heavy DGWs coming up for rounds 12,13 and 14. I normally try to set myself up with four or five DGW players whenever possible, and I've prepared myself for that.
However, for some reason I always feel like I need to do something to my team. I know my backline isn't the greatest. I have $0.4m left in the bank. Are there any alarming changes you would make, or should I stand pat and keep an extra transfer for next week?
Thanks for your help.

Looking at your lineup, you’ve got four players in DGW this round, four players in DGW next round and then three in round 14. That’s quite the effective and balanced use of your Wildcard. An extra transfer next week would be quite helpful in further preparing for rounds 13 and 14.

The nice thing about rounds 13 and 14 are the 10 teams involved. That’s enough variety to go through that stretch and come out with a balanced team capable of competing in normal weeks.

Hope this helps!
