The New York Red Bulls put out a lineup primarily of reserves on Wednesday night in El Salvador and paid the price with a scoreless draw that sees them eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions League.
Saër Sène's skied penalty attempt mid-way through the first half was the closest New York came to breaking the deadlock. The big Frenchman got the opportunity after Ambroise Oyongo had been dragged down in the area, but Sène could not put his attempt anywhere close to the frame.
Late in the second half, fellow reserve Ruben Bover also had a good look, but his header from six yards off an Oyongo cross was easily handled by FAS goalkeeper Luis Contreras.
The result means the Red Bulls cannot catch Montreal, who are on 9 points after winning all three of their Group 3 games. New York (1-1-1) are on four points, which makes the final group stage encounter on Oct. 22 at Red Bull Arena, academic.
