AMSTERDAM – A trio of Americans clocked in for English Championship duty on Wednesday, with Oguchi Onyewu and Sheffield Wednesday suffering a hard-luck 1-0 loss at Wigan.
The US defender rung up a game-high nine clearances and executed a pair of offside traps. Just when it appeared the Owls had done enough to earn a share, a controversial Jordi Gómez penalty kick in stoppage time left them with consecutive away defeats for the first time since November.
Despite the loss, Wednesday remain 10 points above the drop zone with 12 games to play.
Around the league, Will Packwood and Jonathan Spector formed the right side of defense as Birmingham City rallied three times for a 3-3 draw with visiting title-chasers Burnley.
Right back Spector was culpable on the road side's 30th-minute opener, his poor clearance attempt falling directly at the willing feet of Dean Marney. Moments before the Brums leveled matters for the third and final time on Federico Macheda's last-minute strike, the Chicago-area native nearly atoned for his mistake by whistling a shot just wide of frame.
Meanwhile, playing in the middle, Packwood chipped in with 10 clearances. Now winless in three, Birmingham stand eight points above the relegation mire in 19th place.
