Add another center back to the Red Bulls' dwindling stable of defenders.
New York announced Thursday morning the signing of former Uganda national team captain Ibrahim Sekagya, pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate. Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not released.
“We are delighted to sign Ibrahim and we are sure his experience will strengthen our options in defense,” Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh said in a written statement. “He was well respected and liked by our colleagues at Red Bull Salzburg and we are confident he can play a role in our team as we enter into the second half of our regular season.”
Sekagya, who is primarily a central defender, played Red Bull Salzburg of the Austrian Bundesliga from 2007 until the completion of the club's most recent season, featuring in 165 games and scoring six goals. He served as Salzburg captain at times during his stint with the club and was a member of the squad that won the Austrian Bundesliga title three times (2008-09, 2009-10 and 2011-12), 2012 League Cup.
On the international level, Sekagya was was part of the Uganda’s 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns, and earned 26 caps during his time with his country, scoring three goals and captaining his country until retiring from international soccer.
