American Exports: Clint Dempsey in starting XI for Tottenham Hotspur in $77M Champions League decider

Clint Dempsey with Tottenham

With nearly $77 million potentially in the offing, was there any chance Clint Dempsey would not make the starting XI for Tottenham Hotspur?

Probably not.

And in due course, the US international has been handed a starting role for the massive season finale at home against Sunderland.

Spurs are currently in fifth place, one point behind North London rivals Arsenal. If Spurs win and Arsenal lose or draw at Newcastle, Spurs will finish the season in fourth place, earning them one of the four UEFA Champions League spots designated to the Premier League -- as well as up to $76.85 million that a Champions League berth is worth

Remember, Dempsey, who struck for 12 goals in his first season at White Hart Lane, joined Spurs last summer with the stated purpose of playing in the Champions League. Heading into the match, he tried to remain positive.

“It’s all about what we can control, making sure we get the three points and hoping everything falls into place,” he told TottenhamHotspur.com. “That’s what our mindset is and that what we have to make sure we go out and accomplish."
