US Open Cup: First Round kicks off today with U-23s of Seattle, Portland, New York

The 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is officially underway.

After a pair of play-in games last week, the First Round starts Tuesday, with amateur teams from all across the US, plus four teams from the third-division USL PRO set to kick things off.

The breakdown of the 36 teams for the First Round is as follows:

  • USL PRO: 4 teams
  • USL Premier Development League: 16 teams
  • National Premier Soccer League: 8 teams (including 2 play-in winners)
  • US Adult Soccer Association: 8 teams

The PDL and NPSL are equivalent to the fourth division in the U.S. Soccer pyramid, while the USASA can be equated to the fifth division.

Three entrants of note to follow for MLS fans are the U-23 teams from the New York Red Bulls, Portland Timbers (pictured above) and Seattle Sounders. The teams are largely composed of college players, many of them academy products of their respective teams, and boast MLS alumni such as DeAndre Yedlin and Connor Lade.

The 18 winners from the First Round will join 14 North American Soccer League (NASL) and USL PRO teams in the Second Round, which is set for next week. The 16 winners there will move on to the Third Round, set for May 28, when the 16 MLS entrants join the competition.
