American Exports: Brondby interested in adding Rolfe

If fit, Chris Rolfe should see regular time as a starter for Aalborg.

AMSTERDAM — Aalborg BK’s Chris Rolfe is currently receiving transfer interest from SAS Liga rival Brøndby, MLSsoccer.com has learned through multiple sources.

Last week, reports suggested that Rolfe was pursuing a move back to Major League Soccer, but one source indicated to MLSsoccer.com that this avenue is not being discussed in earnest.

The 28-year-old, now into the final year of his contract, has notched six goals and seven assists in 32 league outings since arriving from the Chicago Fire in January 2010. This season, Rolfe is tied for second on the squad in both goals and assists with four of each.

Citing a drop in revenue, Aalborg sport director Lynge Jacobsen recently announced that the club was requesting pay cuts for those negotiating extensions, telling Danish outlet Sporten they were aiming to trim the budget by 25 to 50 percent this year.

Brøndby are also tightening the belt a bit these days, but have been trying to add an affordable impact player to the attack since summer. As they have netted just 20 goals through 18 matches and stand but six points clear of the trap door at the winter break, that search has intensified for a club that last played second-flight ball three decades ago.

The team from Copenhagen's west side is no stranger to Americans; Clarence Goodson now captains the squad, with Brad Friedel and Christopher Sullivan among their former players. Brøndby also once auditioned Nottingham Forest's Robbie Findley, and MLSsoccer.com previously confirmed an interest in Sporting KC's Teal Bunbury and free agent Eddie Johnson during the last six months.

Brøndby will emerge from their winter break with a March 4 visit from SønderjyskE. Aalborg, who sit mid-table in seventh at the pause, return to play later that night against visiting champs FC Copenhagen.
