Mock Draft Part 2

The 2012 MLS SuperDraft is just days away (Thursday, noon ET; ESPN2 and ESPN3), and our experts have differing views on who’s headed where and which teams and players will make the biggest splash.

With the MLS Combine set to kick off on Friday, Jan. 6 (live coverage of all the matches on MLSsoccer.com), Simon Borg, Jason Saghini and college beat writer Travis Clark present their revised mock drafts for both rounds of the SuperDraft. Watch for a final update to the mock draft which will appear after the Combine on Wednesday.

<strong>Jason Saghini</strong>
<strong>Travis Clark</strong>
<strong>1</strong>
<img alt="“" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/league/montrealimapact_logo.png" style="width: 55px; height: 55px;">
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Chandler Hoffman (FW)</strong><strong>UCLA/GA [UP from #5]</strong></div><p style="text-align: left;">The Alabama native projects to be the American version of Chicharito, and the Combine has confirmed it. Natural-born goal scorers are a rarity.</p>
<strong>Darren Mattocks (FW)</strong><strong>Akron/GA [UNCHANGED]</strong><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">Speedy goal scorers are hard to find. Can&#39;t pass up this opportunity, although Wenger&#39;s all-around abilities make him hard to look past.</p>
<strong>Darren Mattocks (FW)</strong><strong>Akron/GA [UNCHANGED]</strong><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">The high-flying forward gives Jesse Marsch a dangerous offensive weapon up front. Hopefully the Jamaican likes the cold.</p>
<strong>2</strong>
<img alt="" src="https://league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/vancouver_150.png" style="width: 51px; height: 74px; float: left;">
<strong>Andrew Wenger (DF/MF)</strong><strong>Duke/GA [DOWN from #1]</strong><p style="text-align: left;">The Generation adidas signing who is said to be the most complete soccer player in the SuperDraft falls to the Whitecaps, who pick up a starter.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Andrew Wenger (DF/MF)</strong><p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Duke/GA</strong><strong>[UNCHANGED]</strong></p></div><p style="text-align: left;">Center back is the top need and Wenger is the best prospect there. And at defensive midfield. And arguably at wide mid and forward.</p>
<div class="compHdr" style="text-align: center;"><strong>Andrew Wenger (DF/MF)</strong><strong>Duke/GA [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p>The utility man offers depth at center back or defensive midfield for Vancouver and can start right away.</p>
<strong>3</strong>
<img alt="" height="55" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/newengland_150.png" width="55">
<div class="compHdr" style="text-align: center;"><strong>Darren Mattocks (FW)</strong><strong>Akron/GA [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">The most feared college forward in 2011 falls to New England and Jay Heaps has to pull the trigger.</p>
<div class="compHdr" style="text-align: center;"><strong>Chandler Hoffman (FW)</strong><p><strong>UCLA/GA</strong><strong>[UNCHANGED]</strong></p></div><p style="text-align: left;">Jay Heaps just misses fellow Blue Devil Wenger and settles for a goal machine who will make great runs in front of two excellent passers in Shalrie Joseph and Benny Feilhaber.</p>
<div class="compHdr" style="text-align: center;"><strong>Chandler Hoffman (FW)</strong><p><strong>UCLA/GA</strong><strong>[UP from #9]</strong></p></div><p style="text-align: left;">The Revolution need help up top, and Hoffman is someone who just scores goals in and around the 18-yard box.</p>
<strong>4</strong>
<img alt="" height="55" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/toronto_150.png" width="55">
<strong>Andrew Jean-Baptiste (DF)</strong><strong>UConn/GA [UP FROM #12]</strong><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">Toronto FC immediately address their back line needs, which they have made a priority heading into the SuperDraft.<br></p>
<strong>Kelyn Rowe (MF)</strong><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: center;"><strong>UCLA/GA</strong><strong>[UNCHANGED]</strong></p><p style="text-align: left;">Center back is the need, but TFC won&rsquo;t pass on a guy with Rowe&#39;s talent for a center back who would not be a guaranteed starter.</p>
<strong>Andrew Jean-Baptiste (DF)</strong><strong>UConn/GA [UNCHANGED]</strong><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">A hulking central defender, Jean-Baptiste&rsquo;s Generation adidas status makes him an attractive choice for Toronto FC despite still needing time to develop.</p>
<strong>5</strong>
<img alt="" height="55" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/chivas_150.png" width="55">
<div class="compHdr" style="text-align: center;"><strong>Kelyn Rowe (MF)</strong><strong>UCLA/GA [DOWN FROM #2]</strong></div><p>Robin Fraser adds more quality to his midfield with a technical center mid who can also play wide. Rowe&#39;s vision and passing will help spark an attack that was sometimes dormant in 2011.</p>
<div class="compHdr" style="text-align: center;"><strong>Nick DeLeon (MF)</strong><strong>Louisville [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p style="text-align: left;">Chivas could use help in several areas, but adding a potent attacking threat who can play out wide or as a second forward, combine well and get service to Juan Pablo &Aacute;ngel/Alejandro Moreno is a great start.</p>
<strong>Luis Silva (MF)</strong><strong>UCSB [UP FROM #18]</strong><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">A classy midfielder on the ball, Silva is a rare breed: an attacking midfielder from college with great size and skills.</p>
<strong>6</strong>
<img alt="" height="55" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/sanjose_150.png" width="55">
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Luis Silva (MF)</strong><strong>UCSB [DOWN FROM #4]</strong></div><p>Frank Yallop will like Silva&#39;s size, technique and ability to thread the needle. He will add creativity to a team that struggled with it last year.</p>
<strong>Enzo Martinez (MF)</strong><p><strong>UNC</strong><strong>/GA [UNCHANGED]</strong></p><p style="text-align: left;">Addition of a dynamic attacking threat who can play in the middle or out left will help SJ get the most out of the Chris Wondolowski-Steven Lenhart combo up top.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Matt Hedges (DF)</strong><p><strong>UNC </strong><strong>[UNCHANGED]</strong></p></div><p>A beast at the back, Hedges is MLS-ready and could stake a claim for a starting role in 2012 with the Quakes.</p>
<strong>7</strong>
<img alt="" height="55" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/dc_150.png" width="55">
<strong>Casey Townsend (FW)</strong><strong>Maryland [UP FROM #15]</strong><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">Hustling forward and solid finisher will chase down everything and make runs that will open spaces for Chris Pontius, Dwayne De Rosario and Andy Najar.</p>
<strong>Casey Townsend (FW)</strong><strong>Maryland [UP FROM #20]</strong><p style="text-align: left;">D.C. want a forward off whom De Rosario can play and Townsend fits the bill. An upgrade at left back is still a possibility, but expect Hunter Jumper to be taken over Tyler Polak.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Ethan Finlay (FW/MF)</strong><strong>Creighton [UP FROM #10]</strong></div><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">In need of depth on the wings and up front, the versatile Finlay is an intriguing option who can play both positions and contribute right away.</p>
<strong>8</strong>
<img alt="" height="50" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/portland_150.png" width="50">
<div class="compHdr" style="text-align: center;"><strong>Calum Mallace (MF)</strong><strong>Marquette [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p style="text-align: left;">A player after John Spencer&rsquo;s own heart. Tough, spirited, no-nonsense and good on the ball. Can be Jack Jewsbury&rsquo;s double.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Matt Hedges (DF)</strong><p><strong>UNC </strong><strong>[UP FROM #13]</strong></p></div><p>Center back depth is a big need with Horst out for five to seven months, and it is addressed first for Portland.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Austin Berry (DF)</strong><strong>Louisville [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p>Berry is ready to help an MLS team right away, and he&rsquo;ll bolster Portland&rsquo;s back line as a rookie.</p>
<strong>9</strong>
<img alt="" height="55" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/chicago_150.png" width="55">
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Sam Garza (MF/FW)</strong><strong>UCSB/GA [UP FROM #11]</strong></div><p>This is a team that could use depth at wide midfield if Marco Pappa is transferred or Patrick Nyarko is injured. Garza brings speed and skill.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Tony Cascio (FW)</strong><strong>UConn [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p style="text-align: left;">Versatile attacker adds depth to both wings and can play forward if needed. An important pick-up with Marco Pappa&#39;s status up in the air.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Tyler Polak (DF)</strong><strong>Creighton [UP FROM #13]</strong></div><p>The Fire grab a left back for the future in Polak, a member of the Fire PDL side.</p>
<strong>10</strong>
<img alt="" height="55" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/columbus_150.png" width="55">
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Ethan Finlay (FW/MF)</strong><strong>Creighton [UP FROM #19]</strong></div><p>Can play either wing and gives Robert Warzycha the option of moving Eddie Gaven into central midfield if necessary.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Calum Mallace (MF)</strong><strong>Marquette [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p>With attacking help coming in via international waters, Crew find a solid option in the middle of the field who can help if injury prone mids Danny O&#39;Rourke and Tony Tchani go down again.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Sam Garza (MF/FW)</strong><strong>UCSB/GA [UP FROM #11]</strong></div><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">Needing width to help cope with the likely loss of Robbie Rogers and Emmanuel Ekpo, Garza provides an option on both flanks and brings good speed to the table.</p>
<strong>11</strong>
<img alt="" height="55" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/dallas_150.png" width="55">
<strong>Austin Berry (DF)</strong><strong>Louisville [UP FROM #22]</strong><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">Schellas Hyndman takes the best athlete available among the central defender corps. As Zach Loyd showed, athleticism makes the transition to MLS that much easier.</p>
<strong>Greg Jordan (MF)</strong><strong>Creighton [UNCHANGED]</strong><p style="text-align: left;">If anyone can appreciate an unheralded college player that just gets it done, it&#39;s Hyndman. A Daniel Hernandez replacement needs to be found and Dallas don&#39;t have a second round pick.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Casey Townsend (FW)</strong><strong>Maryland [UP FROM #15]</strong></div><p style="text-align: left;">FC Dallas did grab Blas P&eacute;rez recently, but this goal poacher extraordinaire would get onto the end of a number of chances the FCD midfield can create.</p>
<strong>12</strong>
<img alt="" height="55" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/toronto_150.png" width="55">
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Tommy Meyer (DF)</strong><strong>Indiana [UP FROM #21]</strong></div><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">Another defender for TFC, but this one is known for his playmaking abilities from the back. Different dimension from Andrew Jean-Baptiste.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Andrew Jean-Baptiste (DF)</strong><strong>UConn/GA [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">Center back is still their biggest need, so a GA product that has a lot of tools and potential seems like the obvious choice &mdash; they will be happy to see him drop to 12.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Nick DeLeon (MF)</strong><strong>Louisville [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">The glut of attacking midfielders in this year&rsquo;s draft means DeLeon falls to Toronto, a good fit for the 4-3-3 system they employ.</p>
<strong>13</strong>
<img alt="" height="55" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/philadelphia_150.png" width="55">
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Chris Estridge (DF)</strong><strong>Indiana [UP FROM #16]</strong></div><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">Peter Nowak loves players who are versatile and although he didn&#39;t enjoy a sparkling Combine, Estridge is two-footed and can man either flank.</p>
<strong>Austin Berry (DF)</strong><strong>Louisville [UP FROM #28]</strong><p style="text-align: left;">The Union were burned on set pieces in the playoffs and add defensive depth with a player referred to as an &quot;animal in the air.&quot;</p>
<strong>Kelyn Rowe (MF)</strong><p><strong>UCLA/GA</strong><strong>[DOWN FROM #5]</strong></p><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">Rowe slips down to the Union and joins the wealth of young attacking talent to provide another creative spark in the midfield.</p>
<strong>14</strong>
<img alt="" height="64" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/colorado_150.png" width="64">
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Gienir Garcia (DF) </strong><strong>Cruz Azul [NEW]</strong></div><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">A young left back who is experienced, savvy and whips in a nasty cross. Rapids have int&#39;l slots to make this move early.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Sam Garza (FW)</strong><strong>UCSB/GA [UP FROM #15]</strong></div><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">Hunter Freeman&#39;s signing makes left back a bit less of a worry, allowing Colorado to add a versatile wing option.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Tony Cascio (MF/FW)</strong><strong>UConn [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p>Needing creativity in their midfield, Cascio provides an attacking option on either flank for the retooling Rapids.</p>
<strong>15</strong>
<img alt="" height="62" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/seattle_150.png" width="62">
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Babayele Sodade (FW)</strong><strong>UAB [NEW]</strong></div><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">The big body at forward that the Sounders lost when Nate Jaqua was not retained. Sodade is an intriguing package of size, speed and athleticism.&nbsp;<br></p>
<strong>Ethan Finlay (FW)</strong><strong>Creighton [UP FROM #22]</strong><p style="text-align: left;">Finlay&#39;s versatility in the attacking end adds valuable depth to a team that will play a lot of games in 2012.</p>
<strong>Dom Dwyer (FW)</strong><strong>S. Florida/GA [DOWN FROM #3]</strong><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">Dwyer&rsquo;s game is built on speed, and if he&rsquo;s available at this spot, Seattle would grab him in a heartbeat as he&rsquo;ll be able to stretch the field.</p>
<strong>16</strong>
<img alt="" src="https://league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/sportingkc_logo.png" width="55">
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Tyler Polak (DF)</strong><strong>Creighton/GA [DOWN FROM #7]</strong></div><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">Serious, fiesty, no-nonsense left back who never gives up on a play and will soak up Peter Vermes&#39; tutoring to learn the position.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Jason Banton (MF/FW)</strong><strong>Leicester City [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">With plenty of International spots open and a solid base, Vermes can take a chance on the speedy 19-year old from England.</p>
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Tommy Meyer (DF)</strong><strong>Indiana [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">Another big, physical center back, Meyer provides another option for Vermes on the Sporting back line.</p>

<div class="compHdr"><strong>Nick DeLeon (MF)</strong><strong>Louisville [DOWN FROM #14]</strong></div><p>After attempting to make a Home Grown claim on DeLeon, RSL see him fall into their lap during the draft. Could take over the left side of midfield, allowing Will Johnson to move to the opposite flank.</p>
<strong>Aldo Paniagua (MF)</strong><strong>G. Caballero [UNCHANGED]</strong><p style="text-align: left;">While depth at right back is a key need, Paniagua offers coverage at several places in the midfield, could play right back and is much more experienced than the collegiate options.</p>
<div class="compHdr" style="text-align: center;"><strong>Calum Mallace (MF)</strong><strong>Marquette [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p>An intimidating holding midfielder who can cover a tremendous amount of ground, Mallace would make a reliable backup for Kyle Beckerman.</p>
<strong>18</strong>
<img alt="" height="55" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/houston_150.png" width="55">
<strong>Hunter Jumper (DF) </strong><strong>Virginia [UP FROM #29]</strong><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">A player with a great attitude gets to stay home in Texas, adding much-needed depth at left back for the Dynamo, where converted midfielder Corey Ashe mans the position.</p>
<strong>Dom Dwyer (FW)</strong><strong>So. Florida/GA [UNCHANGED]</strong><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">After picking up two GAs in the first round last year, Dominic Kinnear snags the last remaining one in &#39;12, adding a talented goal-scorer to a depleted front line.</p>
<strong>Enzo Martinez (MF)</strong><strong>UNC/GA [DOWN FROM #7]</strong><p class="compHdr" style="text-align: left;">A maestro on the ball, the Uruguayan attacker would be right at home at the top of the attacking diamond for Houston.</p>
<strong>19</strong>
<img alt="" height="55" src="//league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/mp6/losangeles_150.png" width="55">
<div class="compHdr"><strong>Aldo Paniagua (MF)</strong><strong>G. Caballero [UP FROM #25]</strong></div><p>The experienced youngster from Paraguay takes the spot on the field held by Chris Birchall and fills the spot on the roster once held by Miguel L&oacute;pez.</p>
<strong>Luis Silva (MF)</strong><strong>UCSB [DOWN FROM #8]</strong><p style="text-align: left;">One of the top rated prospects sees a Stefan Frei-like drop, but LA would be thrilled with it, opting to find defensive cover in international market.</p>
<div class="compHdr" style="text-align: center;"><strong>Kirk Urso (MF)</strong><strong>UNC [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p>With Juninho returning to Brazil and Beckham&rsquo;s status unclear, Urso is a capable option in central midfield this late in the first round.</p>

<div class="compHdr" style="text-align: center;"><strong>Kenney Walker (MF)</strong><strong>Louisville [UNCHANGED]</strong></div><p>Needing to fill a number of gaps, Walker provides Montreal with a proven winner, technically gifted midfielder, with a blistering shot.</p>
