GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Joy turned to tears for DaMarcus Beasley and Puebla on Sunday when he committed a defensive error deep into second-half injury time, giving Monterrey the game-tying penalty with the last kick of the match.
Beasley had sparked Puebla’s comeback from 2-0 down to lead Monterrey 3-2, contributing a delicately chipped assist to make the score 2-1. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native played the full game in the Estadio Cuauhtémoc.
It was a miserable Saturday evening for José Francisco Torres as Pachuca were battered 5-0 by Tigres UANL. Torres played 90 minutes after returning from his European jaunt with the US national team during the week. Jonathan Bornstein was not involved for Tigres.
Pressure increased on Edgar Castillo’s coach at Club América, Carlos Reinoso. The team lost 1-0 at home to Atlante after going down to 10 men in the 45th minute. Castillo played the full game at left back while Texan Sonny Guadarrama did not dress for Atlante.
Another returnee from the US squad, Southern Californian Michael Orozco Fiscal, was solid at right back for San Luis in their 1-1 draw with Atlas.
Herculez Gomez was on the bench for Estudiantes Tecos in their 2-0 defeat against Jaguares but came on after 70 minutes. The 29-year-old striker went close with a 25-yard direct free-kick.
Los Angeles-born Joe Benny Corona was an unused substitute for Club Tijuana, who drew 1-1 against Toluca.
In the Liga de Ascenso, Marco Vidal played 66 minutes in Club León’s 1-1 tie with Leones Negros.
Further south, in the Colombian first division, goalkeeper Diego Restrepo was on the bench for América de Cali on Friday and did not get any minutes in his team’s 1-1 draw with Envigado.
