Weekly update: Second spot at stake

Wade Barrett

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Dynamo will have to wait one more week to attempt to clinch the second spot in the 2006 MLS Cup Western Conference Playoffs, after earning a 1-1 tie against Real Salt Lake at Rice Eccles Stadium.

Paul Dalglish scored the only goal for the Dynamo at the 20th minute of action, after an assist by Ricardo Clark. Dalglish was able to put the ball past Real Goalkeeper Scott Garlick, with a solid kick from the right side of the box. This was also Dalglish's first goal of the season in only his second start for the Dynamo. Houston, however, was unable to hold on to the lead in the second half. Rookie sub Mehdi Ballouchy scored for the home team at the 60th minute, assisted by Jeff Cunningham.

With the tie, Houston's unbeaten streak reaches five games. The Dynamo (11-8-12) are also still holding on to second place in the Western Conference with 45 points, three ahead of Chivas USA. Houston must either win or tie on Saturday against Colorado, and hope for a tie or a loss by Chivas USA against Real Salt Lake to lock up the second spot in its conference.
