After a two-game road trip, the San Jose Earthquakes return home to Spartan Stadium on Saturday, May 14 when they host new-look FC Dallas (formerly the Dallas Burn). With first place in sight for both teams, second-place FC Dallas and the third-place San Jose Earthquakes will battle to get three points to move up the Western Conference standings. The game kicks off at 7:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on the radio on 1590 AM KLIV (English) and 1370 AM KZSF (Spanish). The first 7,500 fans will receive an Earthquakes Game Tracker poster, presented by Sierra Mist.

The San Jose Earthquakes shut out the MetroStars 1-0 at Giants Stadium to stretch their unbeaten streak to three games. Ronald Cerritos scored his third goal of the season and Pat Onstad made five saves for the shutout. Brad Davis notched his league-leading sixth assist in six games this season. The MetroStars had their best chance in the opening 15 minutes of the match as Amada Guevara found a gap in the Quakes defense. Guevara received a pass and dribbled to the top of the penalty box before ripping a long-range shot off the near post. San Jose was then able to clear the ball out of danger. Sergio Galvan Rey flicked a header off the crossbar at the 30-minute mark of the first half off a corner kick from Guevara. Guevara whipped a cross in to the near post that Galvan Rey flicked to the back post, but the ball skimmed off the crossbar. Brian Ching almost broke the deadlock in the 35th minute after turning on his defender in the box. Wade Barrett played a give-and-go with Cerritos and then found Ching inside the box, 15 yards from the goal. Ching turned to his left and got free from his defender before shooting to the far post, but MetroStars goalkeeper Zach Wells got a piece of the shot and tipped it wide. The Quakes came out attacking in the second half and were finally rewarded in the 60th minute with a goal by Cerritos. De Rosario took the ball down the left wing and slipped a pass between two defenders to Brad Davis, who turned and swung a cross to the back post for Cerritos. Cerritos got free from his defender and headed the ball into the corner past Wells for the eventual game-winning goal. The Quakes then limited the MetroStars chances over the last 30 minutes to earn their first shutout of the 2005 season.

The San Jose Earthquakes advanced to the MLS Cup Playoffs with a 2-2 tie against the Dallas Burn at the Cotton Bowl. Brian Ching and Ramiro Corrales scored for San Jose, who qualified for the playoffs for the fourth straight season. The Burn took the lead in the 12th minute on an Eddie Johnson goal, as he volleyed home a beautiful cross by Jason Kreis from the right side with his left foot past a helpless Pat Onstad. Once the Burn scored, the Quakes seemed to pick up the pace, with Richard Mulrooney finding Brian Ching on a header that went just wide of the post. The Quakes lost Ronnie Ekelund to a strained left hamstring in the 27th minute, as Dwayne De Rosario replaced him, but then seven minutes later San Jose managed to tie the match on Ching's goal in the 34th minute. Brian Mullan received the ball on the right side and tore into the Burn penalty area, streaking past defenders before finding Landon Donovan in the middle of the box, who touched the ball forward before sending a pass up to Ching in the middle, where he headed home the tying goal past Jeff Cassar for a 1-1 game. Just two minutes later, Ramiro Corrales put the Quakes up 2-1 when he found himself on the end of another stellar effort from Mullan. Mullan took over a loose ball and tore into the penalty area, lofting a perfect pass across the area to Corrales, who headed home a ball in the far corner for a 2-1 lead. The Quakes were dealt another blow in the 53rd minute when Mullan was forced to leave the game with an injured ankle, and in the 62nd minute the Burn evened the score at 2-2 on a goal by Oscar Pareja. After a throw-in by Carey Talley soared into the middle of the field, Simo Valakari jumped up and headed the ball toward the Quakes goal. Kreis touched the ball down to Pareja, who was inside the Quakes defense and the Burn midfielder managed to send the ball past Onstad to make it 2-2. The Burn continued to push forward, but two dangerous Kreis free kicks near the San Jose penalty box were knocked away and the Quakes were able to hold off the Burn to clinch the fourth playoff spot in the West.
Misc. Notes
Maggiano's Media Luncheons
The San Jose Earthquakes will host monthly media luncheons at Maggiano's Little Italy in Santana Row throughout the 2005 Major League Soccer Season. The first luncheon of the 2005 season will take place on Thursday, May 12 at 1:15 p.m. PT. At each luncheon, the Quakes will announce the Maggiano's Earthquakes Player of the Month and the Earthquakes Goal of the Month. President and General Manager Alexi Lalas, head coach Dominic Kinnear and all the players and coaches will be available for interviews at the luncheons. Maggiano's is located at 3055 Olin Ave at Santana Row in San Jose. After the first luncheon, all future media luncheons are scheduled for the first Tuesday of every month.
Quakes Stretch Unbeaten Streak
With their win over the MetroStars on Saturday, the Quakes are currently on a three-game unbeaten run. The Earthquakes defeated the Kansas City Wizards 3-2 on April 23, tied Real Salt Lake 2-2 on April 30, and most recently defeated the MetroStars by a 1-0 margin on May 7.
Davis On A Roll
Midfielder Brad Davis has proven to be a dangerous asset for the Quakes in 2005. In his last three games, Davis has notched an assist against the Kansas City Wizards, Real Salt Lake, and the MetroStars. In 2004 with the Dallas Burn, Davis only registered two goals and two assists on the year. But this season, the Quakes midfielder already has one goal and six assists after just six games. Davis has recorded an assist in every game in 2005 except on April 16 against the Chicago Fire.
Onstad Earns First 2005 Shutout
Quakes goalkeeper Pat Onstad earned his first shutout of the 2005 season on Saturday with the Quakes 1-0 win over the MetroStars. Onstad made five saves to preserve the San Jose victory. Prior to the May 7 game, Onstad had allowed at least two goals in every game this year, letting 11 shots find the net after only five games, the second most goals allowed in the league. The shutout lowered the Canadian goalkeeper's goals against average from 2.20 to 1.83. Onstad has now earned 16 shutouts during his career with the Earthquakes.
Quakes Get Giant Win
The Earthquakes finally managed a victory in Giants Stadium against the MetroStars on Saturday. San Jose's 1-0 win on May 7 was the first time the Quakes have earned a victory on the Metros turf since September 22, 1999. The Quakes held just a 0-1-4 record at Giants Stadium from 1999 to 2004. San Jose has now won four out of their 12 away appearances against the Metros.
Road Tripping
After beginning the 2005 season with the comfort of playing three out of their first four games at home, the Earthquakes face a difficult road trip ahead of them. After visiting New Jersey to take on the MetroStars, the Quakes will play on the road three more times in the month of May, including stops in Los Angeles, Colorado, and Kansas City. The Earthquakes will take a break in the middle of the away stretch when they return home to Spartan Stadium to play FC Dallas on Saturday, May 14. Including the Quakes match against RSL on April 30, they have five out of six consecutive games on the road.
Ching and Davis Lethal Combination
Forward Brian Ching and midfielder Brad Davis are a dangerous duo this season. Davis has assisted on all of Ching's four goals in 2005. Ching's first three goals all came off of Davis' free kicks on April 2 against New England, April 9 vs. Chivas USA, and April 23 against Kansas City. Ching's goal on April 30 against Real Salt Lake was the first time Davis found Ching in the run of play.

Fouls Committed, Fouls Suffered
After six games in 2005, San Jose leads MLS in both fouls committed (125) and fouls suffered (114) by wide margins. In their season opener against New England on April 2, San Jose set the team record with 30 fouls committed. Individually, Brian Ching is first in the league with 23 fouls committed, while rookie Danny O'Rourke is tied for second with Simo Valakari of FC Dallas with 22. Brian Mullan remains the most-fouled player in the league with 25 fouls suffered. The Earthquakes are now committing on average 20.83 fouls per game and suffering 19.
