Team bonds with friendly competition

Striker Cornell Glen was 'fired' from FC Dallas' preseason challenge Monday.

After an impressive 2-1 victory over Molde last night, FC Dallas hit the swimming pool Tuesday at their complex in La Manga, Spain. They did a few swimming drills and tried running in the pool to help strengthen their legs. After their swimming workout, the teams competed in their daily "Survivor-Apprentice" competition.

The panel (consisting of Colin Clarke, Steve Morrow, Brian Haynes, Marco Ferruzzi, Josh Watts and Marcus Owens) designates one captain per event for "Team A" and "Team B". After each event, the losing team's captain will pick two others from his team to bring to the "board room" to meet with the panel. The panel will then select one player who gets "fired." The players all put money in a pot at the beginning of the challenge and the winner takes all. The two teams are listed below:
Team A:
Oscar Pareja, Alex Yi, Clarence Goodson, Richard Mulrooney, Chris Gomez, Mario Torres, Ramon Nunez, David Wagenfuhr, Chris Gbandi, Aaron Pitchkolan, Drew Moor, Patrice Abanda, Corey Woolfolk
Team B:
Jeff Cassar, Scott Garlick, Carey Talley, Arturo Alvarez, Simo Valakari, Bobby Rhine, Philip Salyer, Ronnie O'Brien, Chris Gbandi, Ty Maurin, Cornell Glen, Eric Quill, Paulo Nibra
Tuesday's first competition at the pool was a three-part series where each player from one team went one-on-one with another player from the other team in a one lap sprint. Team B won with Carey Talley winning the final swim over David Wagenfuhr. Next, the two teams selected the five best swimmers on each team and competed in a two-lap relay race (Team A won that race). The final stage in a winner-take-all challenge had each team pick their best butterfly swimmer in a one lap race. Team A with Chris Gomez defeated Team B with Simo Valakari.
The captain for Team B in the morning was Jeff Cassar and he was forced to select two other teammates to take to the "board room" and meet with the panel. Cassar chose Cornell Glen and Arturo Alvarez. After a 10-minute meeting, the board selected Cornell Glen to get "fired," and Glen is eliminated from the challenge. Oscar Pareja was the captain of the winning team and will be immune the next time his team loses.
In the afternoon, the players had to hang on the crossbar and the last one standing gave his team a victory. For Team A, Clarence Goodson, Oscar Pareja and Drew Moor made the finals (team captain was Richard Mulrooney). For Team B, Philip Salyer, Ty Maurin and Simo Valakari reached the finals (team captain was Scott Garlick). The final two came down to Clarence Goodson and Philip Salyer. Goodson was the winner and Team A celebrated by mobbing the victorious Goodson. Team B Captain Scott Garlick decided to take Valakari and Arturo Alvarez to the board room with him. Colin Clarke and the rest of the panel unanimously decided to "fire" Garlick. The two players who are not around to compete in the challenge are now Cornell Glen and Scott Garlick (both from Team B).
Along with the "Survivor-Apprentice" competition, the team will designate one player each day to wear a dress and a pink cowboy hat to lunch or dinner. Scott Garlick volunteered to do it Monday because you can only wear the outfit once and Garlick wanted to get it out of the way. Tuesday, Carey Talley was assigned the dress and hat at lunch for splashing the coaching staff in the pool with a cannonball.
