The Earthquakes enjoyed a stellar week with a 3-0 win over the A-league Portland Timbers in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on July 14, in addition to snapping their three-game MLS losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Colorado Rapids on July 17. The Quakes (5-6-5) will look to continue their success on Saturday, July 24 at 7:00 p.m. PT at Spartan Stadium when they take on the New England Revolution (4-8-5). The Quakes are currently on an eight-game unbeaten streak against the Revs, posting a 7-0-1 record since May 5, 2001. The game will be broadcast live on the radio on 1590 AM KLIV (English) and 1370 AM KZSF (Spanish). Saturday night is Budweiser Hispanic Heritage Night at Spartan Stadium, featuring a pre-game festival and music by Cambio de Piel and EMI Latin recording artist Chuy Jr. The Quakes will also honor a number of local organizations that are leaders in the Bay Area Hispanic community.

The San Jose Earthquakes snapped a three-game losing streak in impressive fashion, exploding for a 3-1 win over the Colorado Rapids. Brian Ching led the way for the Quakes with two goals and Landon Donovan added the third in the second half as the Quakes dominated throughout the game in securing their first win since June 12. The Earthquakes took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute on Ching's eighth goal of the season. Mullan passed the ball to Donovan near the top of the 18-yard box, who sent it to an open Ronnie Ekelund in the middle of the field. Ekelund sent a perfect ball through the middle of the area to Ching, who one-timed a shot past a diving Joe Cannon. The Quakes pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 50th minute on a crazy sequence that started when Donovan flicked a San Jose clearance over the head of the last Rapids defender, setting up a breakaway. As Donovan moved in alone with just Cannon to beat, he lost the ball, forcing it to squirt out to the right side, where Mullan then passed to an open Donovan on the left side. Donovan blasted a shot that nailed the left post, deflecting into the middle of the penalty box, where he recovered the rebound. Donovan then passed off to Corrales at the edge of the 18-yard box and he dribbled into the left corner before sending a low cross through the defense, where an open Ching powered the ball into the empty net. Five minutes later San Jose extended the lead to 3-0 when Richard Mulrooney intercepted a Rapids clearance on the right side and dished off to Mullan. Mullan sent a cross into the box to a cutting Donovan, who one-timed a low shot from 10 yards out past Cannon. The Rapids closed the deficit to 3-1 on a Seth Trembley goal in the 82nd minute. Trembley received the ball in the middle of the field and dribbled to the 18-yard line and powered a shot into the left corner past a fully extended Pat Onstad.

The Earthquakes won their first game of the 2004 season behind incredible goals from Dwayne De Rosario and Arturo Alvarez just two minutes apart in the second half to rally for a 3-1 victory over the New England Revolution. The Revolution took the lead first when Taylor Twellman slipped home a 49th-minute goal, but a stunning overhead kick from De Rosario tied the game in the 53rd minute. Two minutes later Alvarez finished off a Landon Donovan cross to give San Jose the lead. Earthquakes goalkeeper Pat Onstad made numerous difficult saves as the Revs valiantly looked to tie, but the Quakes put the finishing touches on the win in the 75th minute when a well placed through ball from Donovan was whipped into the goal by Brian Ching for the 3-1 win. The Quakes nearly scored in the opening minutes of the game when Donovan and De Rosario played a give-and-go, with Donovan collecting the return pass and racing in on Revs goalkeeper Adin Brown only to see his rolling shot bounce off the post.

The Earthquakes are looking to improve on their play in the month of July. Since 1996, the Quakes have a 17-25-4 MLS regular season record in the month. Last season, San Jose went 2-1-2 during July. In 2004, the Quakes are currently 1-3-0 in July.
San Jose Downs Timbers in U.S. Open Cup
The San Jose Earthquakes began play in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, July 14 with a 3-0 win over the A-League's Portland Timbers at PGE Park in Portland, Oregon. Ronnie Ekelund, Ramiro Corrales and Dwayne De Rosario scored for the Quakes. The Earthquakes will play the winner of the July 20 Los Angeles Galaxy - Minnesota Thunder match in the quarterfinals. If the Quakes are to face the Galaxy in the Cup, it will be a rematch of the 2002 quarterfinals when Los Angeles scored a goal in overtime for a 1-0 win over the Earthquakes. San Jose has now advanced to the quarterfinals six times in their seven Open Cup appearances and is 8-6 overall in U.S. Open Cup play.
Alvarez With U.S. Under-20 Team
Arturo Alvarez missed the July 17 match against the Rapids while he was with the U.S. Under-20 National Team for the 2004 Milk Cup, which takes place in Northern Ireland from July 16-23. Alvarez played 74 minutes for the U.S. in the 2-2 draw against Denmark on July 17 at the grounds of Donegall Celtic FC in Belfast in their first match of the tournament. The U-20s will face Turkey on July 19 and Wales on July 21 to finish off group play in the tournament. Depending on how they finish in Group 2, the U.S. will play on July 23 in the placement match, going up against the team in Group 1 (Brazil, Russia, Northern Ireland, and Israel) that finished in the same position.
Starting Line-Up Turmoil
Due to numerous injuries, national team duties and suspensions, the Earthquakes have had 14 different starting lineups in the 16 games they have played in 2004. Landon Donovan missed three games to play with the U.S. National Team, while Dwayne De Rosario and Pat Onstad both missed two games for Canadian National Team duty. Also, the team has lost 64-man games to injury over the first 16 games of the season.
Mulrooney Is Quakes Only Constant
Earthquakes midfielder Richard Mulrooney is the only member of the San Jose roster who has started and played 90 minutes in all 16 games for the Quakes in 2004. In his 1,440 minutes of play, Mulrooney has scored one goal and notched seven assists for nine points, which is third highest on the Quakes.
Ching Named MLS Player of the Week
Earthquakes forward Brian Ching, named the Man of the Match in the Quakes 3-1 win over the Colorado Rapids on July 17, was also named the MLS Player of the Week. The Haleiwa, Hawaii native earns his first career Player of the Week honor. The acknowledgement is the most recent in a series of accolades received by the 26-year-old, who was also selected to start for the Western Conference team in the Sierra Mist MLS All-Star game on July 31 and earned his second career cap for the U.S. National Team in a 1-1 tie against Poland on July 11 in Chicago. This is the third time this year that a Quakes player has won the award. San Jose goalkeeper Pat Onstad has been named the MLS Player of the Week twice in 2004, in the second week (April 10) and seventh week (May 15) of MLS play.
Nine Players with San Jose Ties To Play In All-Star Reunion Match
The rosters for the 2004 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Weekend Celebration Game have been announced for the MLS USA Legends and MLS World Legends teams. The reunion match will kick-off at 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 31 at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. before the 2004 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game. The game will mainly feature players who participated in the 1994 World Cup and who then continued their career by playing or coaching in MLS. Nine players in the reunion match have ties to the Earthquakes, from both the MLS USA and World Legends teams. Alexi Lalas (current general manager of the Earthquakes), Eric Wynalda (1996-1998), and Mike Burns (2000) will play for the American side, while Frank Yallop (Quakes head coach from 2001-2003, Canada), Michael Emenalo (1996-1997, Nigeria), Raul Diaz Arce (1999, El Salvador), Giovanni Savarese (2000, Venezuela), Richard Gough (1998, Scotland), and Martin Vasquez (1998, Mexico) will be members of the World roster.
Five Quakes See Stars
Five members of the San Jose Earthquakes have been selected as starters for the Western Conference All-Star team in the Sierra Mist MLS All-Star game on July 31 at 11:00 a.m. PT at RFK Stadium. The game will be televised live on ABC. Landon Donovan, Brian Ching, Richard Mulrooney, Jeff Agoos and Pat Onstad will all represent the Quakes in the starting lineup. It is Agoos' record ninth straight selection, while it is Onstad and Ching's first all-star game appearance. Mulrooney will be making his second appearance in the all-star game, and Donovan will be in his fourth game.
Quakes Find Net At Home
The Earthquakes have done well scoring in San Jose in 2004, hitting the net 18 times in just eight appearances at Spartan Stadium, averaging 2.25 goals per game at home. The team is second in the league with goals for at home, trailing only the Los Angeles Galaxy (19).
Donovan Has Multi-Point Game
Earthquakes forward Landon Donovan scored four points on July 17 against the Colorado Rapids with one goal and two assists during his 84 minutes of play. The goal was Donovan's third on the year, but his first since May 15.
Ching Third On Budweiser Scoring Leaders
With his four points on two goals on July 17 against the Colorado Rapids, Earthquakes forward Brian Ching moved up to third place on the Budweiser Scoring Leaders with 20 points on nine goals and two assists. Ching trails only Carlos Ruiz of the Los Angeles Galaxy in total goals scored. Ching is also tied for first in the league with four other MLS players with three game-winning goals.
Quakes Atop Assist Leader Board
Two Earthquakes share the top of the assist leader board with three other MLS players. Midfielder Richard Mulrooney and forward/midfielder Landon Donovan each have seven assists on the year to lead the league. Last year, Mulrooney had seven assists on the entire year. He is just two away from breaking his personal record for assists in a season (9), which he did in 2000 and 2001. The last time Donovan notched seven assists on the year was in 2001 when he finished the season with 10.
Quakes Return To Winning Ways at Home
Up until July 7, the Earthquakes were the only team in the MLS to remain without a loss at home, but their seven-game unbeaten streak at Spartan Stadium snapped with their 2-1 loss to the Dallas Burn. However, the team returned to their winning ways at Spartan Stadium on Saturday, downing Colorado 3-1. The win was the Quakes' first at home since June 12 against the MetroStars. The Quakes now own a 3-1-4 record at Spartan Stadium this year and are one of only three MLS teams to have just one loss at home.

Quakes On a Roll Against Revolution
The Quakes are 13-8-2 all-time against the New England Revolution in the regular season, and recently have dominated the series. The Quakes have not lost to New England in their last eight games, putting together a 7-0-1 record since May 5, 2001. The Revs have not beaten the Quakes since July 22, 2000. San Jose has outscored New England by a 47-33 all-time total. In the second half against the Revs, the Quakes have dominated, outscoring New England 30-19.
